I have to listen to more of Minaj's work. I've just discovered her & I'm trying to figure out what exactly she's trying to do. @Chantal: Really good points. I have to listen to more of Minaj’s work. The artifcace shouldn't be a substitution for truth or substance. The beauty of Andy Warhol--who Miinaj's white double Gaga has been so vocal in her admiration of--was that he was able to embrace emptiness, vanity, vapidness, to the point the work was almost a meditation on it. He was aware that he was talking about nothing, that he had sacrificed meaning to image, which you can realize by reading his own words. Conversely, Gaga and Minaj embrace emptiness while pretending that they're doing something else. That's not art, it's deception. You can say something artfully, elaborately, or with as many layers as you want--but please, say something. I'm with you 200% on the value of fiction and the value of the told story. She might make a fun Halloween costume, but Minaj is no storyteller. At best she's using an original approach to tell the same very dangerous story that most women in her position are encouraged to tell: look at my body, buy me more drinks, yes you can sleep with me as long as my girlfriend comes too. That's what consciousness should be for, watching out for one's known weaknesses.
